As a result, a few hundred thousand customer records were exposed to Google and searchable for some non-trivial period of time. Even after the original pages were taken down, they were still viewable in Google's cache. I think this illustrates how easy it is for a small, relatively simple mistake to escalate into something pretty invasive in the current web environment. I would not be surprised if those pages were initially located by Google because someone browsed them with the Google Toolbar, which can cause web pages to be inserted into the Google index even if they're not linked from anywhere publicly.
