Fred Goldstein and others have looked at the patents and it does indeed
seem as if they are pretty generic patents that cover the VoIP in a very
general way.

IANAL but this does seem to be another blatant abuse of a tragically flawed
patent system. You don't even get your day in court if the most naïve in
your community can impose their will and if investing in what I consider
legal chicanery brings the highest ROI. Is chicanery too harsh a term when
Verizon claims that it cannot survive if Vonage is allowed to continue
while appealing the decision?

A judge has effectively barred Internet phone carrier Vonage from signing up new customers as punishment for infringing on patents held by Verizon,
though the company will be allowed to continue servicing existing
customers. Vonage is planning to appeal.
