-------- Original Message -------- Subject: Re: [IP] NJ Bill Would Prohibit Anonymous Posts on Forums] Date: Mon, 06 Mar 2006 14:19:15 -0800 From: Lauren Weinstein <lauren () vortex com> To: dave () farber net CC: lauren () vortex com Dave, There are of course a veritable cornucopia of legal and practical reasons why this idea is, well, "goofy" is the most polite word I can think of right now ("dangerous" is another one). But for the moment, I'll just point out one particularly amusing aspect. Assuming that there wouldn't also be a requirement that all posters provide credit card or similar financial data (credit cards being the most frequently proposed method for "adult check" type systems), there is no obvious mechanism for "public forum" operators to verify the submitted identity information. So, it's likely that we'd discover far more John Smiths living at 1313 Mockingbird Lane than we ever might have suspected! Goofy and dangerous to the max. --Lauren-- Lauren Weinstein lauren () vortex com or lauren () pfir org Tel: +1 (818) 225-2800 http://www.pfir.org/lauren Co-Founder, PFIR - People For Internet Responsibility - http://www.pfir.org Co-Founder, IOIC - International Open Internet Coalition - http://www.ioic.net Moderator, PRIVACY Forum - http://www.vortex.com Member, ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy Lauren's Blog: http://lauren.vortex.com DayThink: http://daythink.vortex.com
