"A" of AT&T once stood for "American". The rest of the world shouldn't be surprised that ATT views itself as a tool of the American government. They have in the past handed over all international cables in Operation Peacock while lying about it.
If you want your privacy, don't expect it from America or American companies anymore. That America apparently is inoperative, along with the idea that we obey treaty obligations or believe that each citizen is entitled to vote.
