The AARP Bulletin recently reported a scam in which people received fraudulent calls claiming they missed jury duty and asking for their Social Security number. The calls seemed legitimate because the telephone number of the local courthouse showed up on caller ID. In Pennsylvania, constituents of Republican Rep. Tim Murphy were flooded with bogus calls from someone purporting to be from Murphy's office. The primary worry for consumers is that if a call appears to be coming from their bank, credit card company or a government agency, they could be persuaded to give up financial data a thief could use to open new bank accounts or apply for loans and credit cards. ... http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2006-07-06-caller-id-scam_x.htm
It seems appropriate to mention this again, since the phone system is basically part of the internet now: http://www.internetrules.info/ Rule number 1 starts with "Do not ever give out any information to anyone who contacts you first, no matter how inconspicuous it seems.". Nearly all scams fall down if you follow this rule, and with most legitimate contacts, the only downside is a little inconvenience. -- - Adam ** Expert Technical Project and Business Management **** System Performance Analysis and Architecture ****** [ http://www.adamfields.com ] [ http://www.aquick.org/blog ] ............
