Dave,

As noted in:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/02/21/AR2006022101844.html

China appears to be turning up the pressure to get even *more*
censorship cooperation from Google, and is now making various
threats against Google via a state-owned newspaper.

I understand (but personally consider unfortunate) Google's decision
to participate in the recently announced "self-censored" Chinese
version of Google. However, this predictable situation demonstrates
the practical difficulties of attempting to finely "calibrate"
compromises that many observers would tend to categorize as more
"evil" than "not evil" -- and the risks of getting sucked further
and further toward the more problematic side of that continuum after
those compromises on ethical issues have been initiated.
