-------- Original Message -------- Subject: RE: [IP] "if you are not doing anything wrong, why should you worry about it?"]]] Date: Sun, 19 Feb 2006 13:15:37 -0800 From: Grawrock, David <david.grawrock () intel com> To: dave () farber net, ip () v2 listbox com What really interests me in all of these surveillance systems is what they do and what people promise. We are promised more "security", when what we get is forensic evidence to help solve a crime. It does nothing, or rather little, to prevent the crime. It only helps with putting the finger on who did it. If the potential criminal believes that this is a deterrent to their activity, then the surveillance system adds security. We all know where the traffic cameras are; do we drive differently at that spot? If so then the camera does the job, but if it really were a deterrent then wouldn't the camera become obsolete at that intersection as everyone learns to obey the laws? It seems to keep on working, and generating revenue (or at least paying for itself) for some time. Consider the Huston case, the cameras are not going to stop people, it is going to make the job of the police officers who are left easier. There is also the argument that if you get the bad guy off the street he will not commit another crime, but that requires the court system to work correctly and that debate is for another day.
