Calling it a mess is a big understatement djf Begin forwarded message: From: Tim Onosko <onosko () gmail com> Date: June 12, 2005 4:51:29 PM EDT To: dave () farber net Subject: Re: [IP] Tellywood and the Cable Orifices Reply-To: tim () onosko comI don't have time to write a full comment so I'll just note – I tried
hooking up a DVI cable to my Comcast/Motorola STB while viewing component video on my Dell 1920x1200 monitor and up popped a message: HDCP Authentication Failed. Please use the YPbPr outputs for your HD connection. There may be another side effect to the situation Bob Franskston described above. Those YPbPr inputs are analog, not digital inputs, and in accordance with FCC rules, the channels he wanted to view on that monitor might be visible, but downgraded to 480P (which, in turn, would be uprezzed to fill the Dell monitor screen.) Cable rules allow this, and in fact stipulate this treatment for non- digital, non DRM'd inputs (like HDCP and DVI.) It's the compromise, wherein you can watch what you pay for, but not in HD, because of the so-called "analog hole" -- read "loophole."
Under this scenario, it's quite possible that people paying for high- def channels may either never see them in HD, or see something uprezzed that looks sort of okay but not.
