Hi Dave,

A post that appeared on your listserv December 8 regarding unauthorized messages being sent to Congress was brought to our attention by a list member. Capitol Advantage has been in business for 20 years and in the online advocacy field for 10 years. Our reputation is extremely important to us, and we also stand behind the campaigns that we help to deliver.

I hope that you will post the following that was sent to us by our customer who is with the Protect Your Healthcare campaign. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions. My contact information follows. Thank you, --susie.

Message from Protect Your Healthcare:
The messages to Congress referred to in Tim’s post were sent on behalf of the Protect Your Healthcare campaign (www.protectyourhealthcare.org ), and they were generated based on a form he probably completed on the site of one of the advertisers acting on our behalf. There are several sites where he could have taken this action, and we have asked the advertiser involved to research the exact trail.

Protect Your Healthcare is a reputable group that does not send communications to Congress unless the activist has authorized this and completed a form with name, full mailing address and email address, which I do see on the data I received so far. In a few other instances we've been contacted when someone did not recall signing up for this campaign, and in every instance we were able to find the record of their signup on a particular petition or advertiser site or in response to a particular email newsletter, and with this reminder they or their spouse recalled doing it. In some cases there was a delay in data transfer from the advertiser as a new program gets under way, and this can be the cause of someone not immediately recalling their activity.

At the Protect Your Healthcare campaign we work with a broad advertising network to ensure that the public learns about the potential impact of certain proposed legislation on their health care coverage. We do take every complaint seriously, and if we ever found a rogue advertiser we would cancel our contract with them immediately. As noted above, we are investigating Tim’s complaint to make sure that's not what happened in this case and will let him know of the results.

Thank you on behalf of Protect Your Healthcare,

Susan Berger
