LEAVE. Exit. Depart. Evacuate. Cut all losses. Come home. There is no victory to be had in Iraq. Things will only get worse for everyone the longer Britain remains.

I cannot believe there is a single British minister who disagrees with this view, with the possible exception of Tony Blair. Yesterday's performances by the Defence Secretary, Geoff Hoon, and his deputy, Adam Ingram, over reports of torture by coalition troops show only that the Cabinet has no policy in Iraq. It is clinging for dear life to Washington's coat tails.

Never in modern history has Britain been so humiliatingly in thrall to an overseas power as London now is to Washington. Ministers live in daily terror of news from the front. They squirm, prevaricate, lie and pray for release. The Cabinet could as well be hooded and piled in a naked heap while a jeering GI looks on.
