Skype Signs On Four Carriers in Preparation for New Pre-Pay Service

VoIP communications provider Skype Technologies has formed agreements with COLT, iBasis, Level 3 and Teleglobe to provide call-termination services worldwide. The agreements are integral to the company's plans to roll out SkypeOut, a soon-to-be-launched pre-pay service for global calling.

"It is very significant for the company, because it means they will be able to offer connections to PSTN companies," Jon Arnold, telecom analyst with Frost & Sullivan, tells NewsFactor.

In practical terms, it means that current Skype customers will be able to call outside the Skype universe with the prepaid service, which is why it has been called SkypeOut. Arnold said that the company also plans to offer a service called SkypeIn -- a service in which people who are not Skype customers can call Skype users.
