CPSR, Amnesty and the newly formed Carnegie Mellon Chapter of the ACLU jointly present: Fixing the PATRIOT ACT: Can Surveillance, Security and Civil Rights Mix? A Talk with Barb Feige Director of the Pittsburgh ACLU Wednesday, October 22nd 4:30 p.m. Peter/Wright Room, University Center, CMU Campus Just 45 days after the September 11 attacks, with virtually no debate, Congress passed the USA PATRIOT Act which was quickly signed into law by President Bush. Many parts of this sweeping legislation take away checks on law enforcement and threaten the very rights and freedoms guaranteed by the Bill of Rights and the Constitution. For example, without a warrant and without probable cause, the FBI now has the power to access your most private medical records, your library records, and your student records ... and can prevent anyone from telling you it was done. Attorney General John Ashcroft is expected to introduce additional legislation that would further erode key freedoms and liberties. Other lawmakers are unveiling new proposals that aim to fix the PATRIOT Act and curtail federal authority to conduct "sneak and peak" delayed notification searches and rein in government access to the private records of American citizens. Please join us for a talk with Barb Feige, Director of the Pittsburgh ACLU about how the PATRIOT Act uses technology and surveillance in violation of our civil liberties and what you can do to keep America both Safe AND Free. ------------------------------------- You are subscribed as interesting-people () lists elistx com To manage your subscription, go to http://v2.listbox.com/member/?listname=ip Archives at: http://www.interesting-people.org/archives/interesting-people/
