Maybe there are no inner-core cities in Alaska? ------ Forwarded Message From: Dewayne Hendricks <dewayne () warpspeed com> TR Daily reports that Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee told attendees at an NTCA breakfast that he had extracted a promise from FCC Chairman Michael K. Powell that he will travel to Alaska this summer to observe rural telecom problems first-hand. TR reports that Senator Stevens also warned of the dangers facing the federal Universal Service Fund (USF) and called for an overhaul of the program. According to TR, Senator Steven said that, "All companies who use the network, in my judgment, should contribute to universal service, regardless of the type of service they provide." TR reports that Senator Stevens later repeated his past criticisms of the "E-rate" program for schools, libraries, and rural health care facilities to reporters. He told the reporters, "It was originally a fund for rural America now it's a fund where more of the money is being spent in the inner-core city than is being spent in rural America."
