If only this was unique. There are various such institutions running under different guises but all employing the same, time-honoured techniques of personality reprogramming. Many of the same tricks were employed by the Calvinists in 17th century Scotland, and cults have been following the recipe with zest ever since. For an example, check out the Pensacola Christian College (http://www.pcci.edu/) and compare with what the refuseniks from the institution describe at http://www.pensacolachristiancollege.com/ . Many of the strict disciplinary ideas are identical with the Tranquility outfit -- yet why parents send their kids to a college that forbids visits to off-campus libraries, I can only guess. The issues of free will and personal choice are complex when dealing with children and those who society deems to have forfeited such rights through their acts, and the owners of institutions like the above are usually very cute when it comes to operating within the law. Places like Tranquillity and Pensacola are most vulnerable to the sunlight of publicity and dispassionate reporting, so the best attack is to make as many people aware of them as possible. The Observer piece was good, but it -- as always -- only scratched the surface.
