Deregulation: Boon or Bust for U.S. Business? Business deregulation has led to more choices for consumers, but a tougher environment for business owners. In the first of a series of reports, NPR's Jim Zarroli examines the advantages and disadvantages of increased competition. Deregulation Trend Lowers Some Prices, Raises Frustration Consumers see prices fall as the airline and telecommunication industries deregulate. But growing competition also brings new hassles, such as poor customer service and increased telemarketing. NPR's Scott Horsley reports. Utility Deregulation Backfires in California, Nevada In part three of a series on deregulation, NPR's Scott Horsley ! reports on how deregulated electrical utilities have increased the cost of powering the neon lights of the Las Vegas strip. Deregulation was supposed to reduce the cost of electricity, but in parts of Nevada and California, it's had the opposite effect. New power plants and transmission lines are expensive, and financial problems at some of the biggest utility companies have made it hard for them to raise the necessary capital. Deregulation - Part IV NPR's Jim Zarroli concludes a four-part series on the effects of deregulation with a report on growing consumer dissatisfaction with less regulated markets and how some of the failures of deregulation might be overcome. Promises that deregulation would create more competition and lower costs have not materialized in some industries, such as local telephone service, cable television and electrical utilities. -- Posted by John Lyon to :: JELyon's Rampage :: at 1/3/2003 5:31:41 PM Powered by Blogger Pro -- Forget Compassionate Conservatism.
