The ITU clearly states that CDMA2000 1X is a 3G technology. Interestingly, if you look on the site you will find out that UMTS, WCDMA, CDMA2000 1X all meet the definition of 3G and are named as 3G standards. But if you look at the verbal definition of 3G you find that in order to be 3G the system have to be capable of 144 Kbps mobile, 384 Kbps pedestrian mobile, and 2.4 Mbps fixed. At present only CDMA2000 1X EV-DO meets all of these requirements. The difference between WCDMA and UMTS is that UMTS is exactly the same but operates only in the 3G band in Europe on 2.1 GHz. I always point folks to the ITU site when this debate rages--and it will continue. But ITU is the official keeper of the terminology.
