Subject: TSA allowed and prohibited items - a corkscrew

Dave - IP readers may be amused (or saddened) by the following:

On the Transportation Security Administration's Web page
(http://www.tsa.dot.gov/trav_consumers/trav_tips.shtm), there is the
following
quote:

<[begin quote]>
Traveler Tips: Dos & Don'ts

DON'T...

Carry prohibited objects like scissors, pocket-knives, mace, and corkscrews.
<[end quote]>

Fair enough. But on the list of permitted items
(http://www.tsa.dot.gov/industry_partners/education_materials/PERMITTED%20IT
EMS%20List%20dated%2010-16-02.doc),

we see on the list:

<[begin quote]>
PERMITTED ITEMS

The following list is provided to assist you in determining what items are
permitted beyond the screening checkpoint after they have been screened.

Medical and Personal Items
...
Corkscrews
<[end quote]>

Hmmm. Corkscrews are a dual-valued item, it seems - explicitly prohibited,
and
explicitly allowed.
