I sure you know that as far back as the 1950s the FBI had a program called COINTELPRO, in which the INTEL stood for intelligence see: http://www.icdc.com/~paulwolf/cointelpro/cointel.htm Another obvious one: On August 20, 1964, the International Telecommunications Satellite Organization (INTELSAT) was formed. see: http://www.hq.nasa.gov/office/pao/History/satcomhistory.html And, of course, sigintel has meant "signals intelligence" as long as I can remember.
