THE SCS HISTORY SEMINAR SERIES ------------------------------ Friday, 22 November 2002 1:00 pm - Wean Hall 5409 w/light refreshments DR. ART EVANS, JR. (CS PhD, '65) "FROM SCS TO SCS" ABSTRACT -------- Long before there was a School of Computer Science, there was an interdisciplinary program called System and Communication Sciences. While much has happened in computer science since then, I think it's important and interesting to look to the past to see where the present came from. In 1957-58, my first year as a graduate student in the Math Department, I discovered the first computer to arrive on campus; I was hooked. I switched my allegiance to the Computer Center (this was long before a computer "department") and eventually completed my doctorate in 1965. Until about 1963, when I (finally) devoted myself to thesis research, I was involved with most of what went on concerning computers at Carnegie. I will share my reminiscences about computing at Carnegie "in the old days." BIO --- During his (too many, which requires an explanation!) years as a graduate student at this school, Dr. Evans was privileged to participate in the formative years of Computer Science here at Carnegie Mellon. After completing his doctorate in 1965, Dr. Evans served on the MIT faculty for six years. Following several industrial positions and a visiting professorship at the University of Utah in 1981-82, he returned to Pittsburgh to join Bill Wulf and others at the newly formed Tartan Laboratories. Following that he consulted for several years. ------ End of Forwarded Message ------------------------------------- You are subscribed as interesting-people () lists elistx com To unsubscribe or update your address, click http://v2.listbox.com/member/?listname=ip Archives at: http://www.interesting-people.org/archives/interesting-people/
