Subject: Intelinking FBI agents with NSA databases

Hi Dave

Perhaps a partial solution to the FBI being unable to access relevant
information on suspected terrorists is to hook it up to the NSA's intranet.

In his book, Body of Secrets, James Bamford writes about the NSA's
secure intranet, Intelink, built mostly on open source.

Once field reports are filed, they are made available instantly to
everyone from warfighters in the field to the US President. An analog of
the civilian Internet, Intelink even has its own chat rooms and search
engine, "Wer'zit?". Vitally important, time-sensitive news, CRITICs,
that once took 18 hours to reach the Oval Office now alert recipients
within three minutes of an event, flashing an icon at the top of the
screen, instant-messaging style.

Something I don't understand is what happened to Echelon? This was
supposed to be an omniscient SIGINT network, yet it failed miserably.
And what is Echelon's status now?
