Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine ---------------------------------------------------- delivering world-class scholarship, education and research The Tanaka Chair in Internet Technology Applications are invited for the Tanaka Chair in Internet Technology within the Faculty of Engineering at Imperial College, based on South Kensington campus. In early 1988, the number of host computers on the internet was around 28,000. By 1999 this had grown to around 43 million, and this year has reached nearly 150 million. The predicted number is around a billion by 2006, including an enormous growth in internet enabled appliances, sensors, actuators and communications/network devices. These embedded computing devices, and services provided by the network, enable mobile users to interact with internet services thereby providing a ubiquitous computing environment. This pervasive environment requires new dynamically programmable network architectures that support fast service creation and resource management through a combination of network?aware applications and application?aware networks. Adaptive networks must be able to support the rapid deployment of customised services tailored for potentially mobile users in applications such as medicine, commerce and entertainment. This environment raises issues of security and privacy due to its ability to track the location and activities of users. As the internet expands, a wide variety of scaling issues will have to be addressed at each of the communications layers from the wireless interface, through the network control to the applications user?interface. Systems must adapt to the current context of users with respect to their location, activity and device capabilities. The internet therefore poses major challenges in order to achieve the required scalability, adaptability, quality of service and security. The role of the Chair in Internet Technologies is to drive the convergence of internet software infrastructure, telecommunications and computer-relevant electronic engineering. The successful applicant is expected to provide Imperial College with the research leadership necessary to investigate and meet some of the challenges of providing a robust internet technology infrastructure, and of applying internet technologies to a variety of applications. Applicants should have proven research leadership experience in one or more of the following areas: * Adaptive internet protocols, and programmable networks and routers * Adaptive internet systems architecture * Internet security * Mobile computing * Simultaneous voice, image and data communication in real time * Quality of service An interest in applications of Internet Technology to healthcare and other sectors would also be an advantage. Further particulars are available from Mrs Janet Jones, Appointments Officer (Professors and Readers), Human Resources Division, Room 513c, Sherfield Building, Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, London SW7 2AZ. Email: janet.jones () ic ac uk Applications (8 copies) should be sent to Janet Jones as above. Closing date: 20 September 2002. The College is committed to equality of opportunity.
