From: "Ridgely C. Evers" <revers () evers org> To: <farber () cis upenn edu> Dave, As John Lyon said in one of your forwardings, "I have the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Perhaps no accident that life comes first in that phrase?" I was struck today by the fact that Wall Street was completely blocked off by police (at least in part so that the traders on the NYSE would feel safe), and that an apparently growing number of flight attendants have refused to fly because they feel that security procedures are inadequate to insure their safety. The McPaper (USA Today) reported that 50+% of people surveyed said that Arabs (even if American citizens) should be subjected to intensified security scrutiny at airports, and 49% said they should be required to carry special ID cards. It would seem that some of the people who feel most at risk are, indeed, willing to "give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety" -- at least temporarily. Politicians will run with this. --Ridge ___________________________________________________ Ridgely C.
