E-mail pamphleteer shines during crisis

NEW YORK - One Sunday over the summer, The New York Times reported in a 
front-page story that Internet users tended to gravitate toward the Web 
sites of the traditional media.
The Internet as little more than galvanizer of entrenched institutions?

The Net has certainly shamed such facile analysis since our catastrophic 
Sept. 11 loss of innocence. No Net tool proved its mettle better than what 
initially lured most of us online: electronic mail.

Extraordinary phenomena shine in extraordinary times, and on the Net these 
past weeks a pedigree of e-mail lists have challenged traditional news 
media as serious competitors for mindshare.
