Dave,
The ABC News piece was more of an outrage than your other reader seems to suggest. While some of your readers may know the history of steganography, others may be taken in by the outrageous title of the ABC News piece: 'Hijackers May Have Used Secret Internet Messaging Technique'. As I'm sure you well know, steganography is a vary ancient art. It's just been hidden from public view until recently. One of the first known book on the subject was 'steganographica' written by Gaspari Schotti in 1665. Almost every intelligence service that ever existed have used steganographic techniques at one point or another. One of the best known ancient uses of steganography was in the book 'Hypnerotomachia Poliphili' published in 1499. There is no excuse to for the blatant misrepresentation by ABC News that steganography relates in any way (other than a transport mechanism) to the internet. It seems that regardless of the earlier report that the terrorists were in fact not using cryptography to secure email, the ABC News staff felt that technology could be blamed for
techniques the terrorists may have in fact used. This is truly disgraceful.

Regards,
Colin
