From: Joel Snyder <Joel.Snyder () Opus1 COM> Subject: Re: IP: Bin Laden's relatives made a first-class escape To: farber () cis upenn edu This is senseless pandering and propaganda. Like many wealthy Saudi families, there are a number of wives and a lot of children. It has been reported that Awad bin Laden had 50 children, giving Osama bin Laden 49 "half brothers" (and half sisters). The family has taken great pains publically, long before the Sept 11th incident, to emphasize that Osama bin Laden is completely cut off and that they have no communication or relationship to him. Osama bin Laden has been a wanted man for many years, and this is not the first time that someone has noticed that he has relatives who live in the US. The family probably chose to leave the US largely because of fear of exactly this kind of yellow journalism: that someone would suddenly decide that "bin Laden" as a family name meant "going to jail." As some of the notes you've forwarded to IP recently prove, we're ready to slice-and-dice the constitution significantly in the aftermath of the Sept. 11th disaster. Similarly for the investment issues: it is a matter of appearances only, which the US media appears to be highlyattuned to. The perception of reality is so much more interesting than reality. This whole article is offensive and the worst sort of journalistic sensationalism.jms
