IP: L.A. County Assessor proposes taxing satellites in orbit

I kid you not.

Assessor Rick Auerbach said that just because something is not physically in
Los Angeles County does not mean it can't be taxed.

"It's about 22,000 miles up in space.  But there is other property that moves
around, taxable property, such as boats, aircraft, construction
equipment...," said Auerbach.

Hughes Electronics in El Segundo (part of L.A. County) owns many
of the birds currently in orbit, and is not pleased with the idea.

The legal status of the concept is, uh, "uncertain" to say the least,
but it's certainly good for a chuckle!
