"SECURE" U.S. SITE WASN'T VERY The U.S. Commerce Department has plugged a security leak in a "Safe Harbor" Web site, but the incident calls the department's security measures into question. The Web site was established to help U.S. companies comply with the European Union's data privacy directive. The leak allowed casual visitors to access and modify sensitive information about American companies, including revenues, employee numbers, and the European nations that they do business with. Back in April, Commerce Secretary Don Evans declared he would create a privacy advisor position to rectify such problems. Said Privacilla.org editor Jim Harper, "When it comes to information management, government is the gang that couldn't shoot straight," (Wired News, 6 July 2001)
