men's channel flicking habits
A survey carried out by ASTRA, the digital satellite operator, has
today revealed that women, driven mad by their partner's channel
flicking habits, are confessing to hiding the remote in a bid to
regain control. It's not just the fact that 50% of men claim to rule
the remote, it's what they do with it that matters!

The highlights are:

  a.. 39% of women complain partners click from one channel to other
  b.. 25% of men spend less than 2 secs on one channel
  c.. 50% of men claim to rule remote
  d.. One in five women hide the remote
  e.. 1in 4 women keen to shop through interactive digital satellite

Channel surfing was top of the list of annoying viewing habits listed
by women about their men. 39% of women complained that their partners
liked to click from one channel to another. What's more, nearly a
quarter of all men spend less than two seconds on each channel before
clicking to the next. And when asked what would make them stick to a
channel, sport wins over an attractive woman with 60% of men saying
something sporty, and 44% an attractive female. Cars (41%) were also
high on the list.

Men hogging the remote control (37%), always watching sport (29%) and
interrupting programmes with Sky digital text (20%) was also a major
source of annoyance according to women.

Programme Choice - A Difference of Opinion

With the vast range of channels now available through digital
satellite television the Bank Holiday weekend will witness a battle of
wills between men and women. In addition to sport, men are more likely
to watch action films and sci-fi, while women favour soaps and
romantic films found on channels like Sky One, UK Gold and Sky Movies.

A compromise may still be found however, both men and women rated
documentaries (73%) and news/current affairs (64%) highly, which
explains why many people are buying digital satellite TV to take
advantage of 24 hours news services, such as CNN and documentary
channels like Discovery, National Geographic and the History Channel.
Nature programmes and comedy films also rated highly among both men
and women.

Men And Women Get Interactive

Long suffering men should get ready to lock up their credit cards.
Women are finding more ways to spend their money! 1 in 4 women
questioned embraces the idea of shopping through interactive digital
satellite television.

Other interactive television services are also proving popular; 35% of
men and women are attracted by the idea of text and email services
through their TV sets. 28% of men also consider Sky Sports Extra a
useful interactive service, and 25% see online banking through digital
TV as a useful tool.

Who are the Sexiest Presenters on TV?

Men voted Cat Deely, presenter on ITV and MTV as their top TV totty
followed by Davina McCall and Carol Smilie. Women voted Jamie
Theakston the sexiest male television presenter, closely followed by
E4's Dermot O'Leary and ex-footballer Ian Wright.

No More Terrestrial TV Agony

Mike Chandler, Managing Director of ASTRA said: "With the advent of
digital satellite television, audiences are becoming more and more
sophisticated in their viewing. The great choice of channels on offer
means that people will always be able to watch programmes of interest
to them when they want to. All of the old frustrations with having
only five terrestrial TV channels have gone.'

interactive digital television - the idea of checking your emails on
screen from the comfort of your sofa seems to be a very attractive one
for most viewers."
