Tension Builds Over 911 Cell Phone Plan

WASHINGTON-Federal regulators and lawmakers are poised for a
showdown with the wireless phone industry over a promising but
controversial technology that would track a mobile phone within 150
to 1,000 feet of its location, thereby enabling 911 operators to
send help to callers. By Jube Shiver Jr.

Funny that this should raise privacy issues as such in the US, considering
that a similar system is promoted as a _feature_ by phone operators here
in Norway.

If you're a NetCom subscriber here in Norway, and specifically in its
capital Oslo, you can authorize your friends to something called "Buddy".

The service allows your friends to save your name associated with a
password and your mobilephonenumber in their buddylist. If they ever wonder
where you are, they can send a message "find <yourname>" and recieve
you (or more precise, your cellphones) current location.

How accurate or detailed the message is depends on cellphone coverage. Abroad
this can be several kilometres, while in Oslo itself the service is usually
accurate up to street level.
