TIFF is quite old, so any patents on it are probably teetering on the brink
of expiration (as is the Unisys Lempel-Ziv-Welch patent).

But why are they using TIFF at all? The original Group 3 FAX standard
provided all of the compression that was necessary for simple FAXes.
Perhaps the IETF should forget about proprietary offerings and go with
something such as DCX or PNG. Both are widely supported and not subject to
intellectual property constraints.

While patents are important to protect inventors, nothing subject to them
should be incorporated into an official industry standard.
