DISHING UP A NEW LINK TO THE INTERNET StarBand Communications has launched a two-way satellite-based Internet service that could appeal to customers who live outside the range of DSL or cable networks. StarBand unveiled its satellite system at the Havasupai Indian reservation, which lies at the bottom of the Grand Canyon and could not receive radio signals, let alone Internet access, until now. Although this reservation is an extreme example, StarBand believes its service will appeal to the 50 million U.S. households that are not located within areas networked for high-speed Internet connections. StarBand's technology is a step forward because it is the first such system to allow users to transmit data through their satellite dishes rather than only receive data. Other satellite Internet connections used a traditional dial-up connection whenever users needed to send information from their computers to the Web. (Washington Post, 6 November 2000)
