New Bill Targets TV Privacy
Wired News Report

12:40 p.m. 23.Feb.2000 PST
A California state senator has introduced privacy legislation that targets
current and next-generation television service providers.

Senator Debra Bowen (D-Redondo Beach) introduced SB 1599, which is aimed
at
preventing cable and satellite television providers from tracking and
selling records of what viewers watch.

She said the law is further necessitated by up-and-coming TV technology
from companies such as TiVo and WebTV, which can track viewing habits via
digital set-top boxes to provide targeted advertising to individuals.
