Why do I think there would be some loud debate on this one -- djf From Edupage Commerce Department General Counsel Andrew Pincus is advising the federal government to ease its Internet regulatory concerns by following the example set by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in developing a relationship with the Internet industry. Pending digital signature legislation in Congress would especially benefit from such an arrangement, and the government could look to ICANN's framework for implementing digital signatures across international borders when it decides how to apply digital signature laws across state and international borders, Pincus said. The Clinton administration is not happy with either the House or Senate versions of the digital signature bill, but nonetheless legislation of some sort is likely to pass, Pincus said. The administration supports the "opt-in" language in the House bill, but has other concerns about the legislation, including consumer-protection and consumer-choice issues. (Newsbytes, 25 April 2000)
