Internet Oversight Body Starts Election Process

By JERI CLAUSING

WASHINGTON -- The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers opens
its first round of elections for board members this week, kicking off a
unique and complex process that promises to be as controversial as the
Internet oversight body's creation.

There are 14 candidates for the first three elected seats, including a
former congressman, several trademark lawyers and Internet engineers and
other professionals from around the world.

The finalists will be chosen by a 19-member council representing business
members of the nonprofit ICANN during votes that begin Monday and could last
all week. Straw polls began over the weekend.

Whatever the outcome, many expect that like everything related to ICANN, it
will be followed by a round of complaints and questions about the process.
