Students Learn Firsthand About Freedom of Press

By JODI WILGOREN
The New York Times

FREEPORT , N.Y. -- There is no news at Freeport High School this fall.

It is not that nothing is going on. On the contrary: The new principal has
banned 10th graders from leaving campus for lunch. The teachers are working
without a contract. And the girls' soccer squad went 6-6 after years without
winning a game.

But when things happen and there is no newspaper to record them, it is
like the
tree falling in the forest with nobody around to hear.

Flashings, "the free press of Freeport High School," dates from 1920 and
counts
itself as the oldest high school newspaper on Long Island. Now its 80th
birthday is in doubt, as a dispute over its longtime adviser has erupted
into a
First Amendment fight and a strike by the student editors.

"As of now," said Michael Leonard, a senior who would be news editor if there
were news to edit, "the administration has taken away the voice of the
students."
