Date: Wed, 23 Jun 1999 10:53:41 -0400 Subject: Public Briefing on Harnessing Science and Technology for America 's Economic Future June 22, 1999 Dear Colleague: On behalf of the Office of Special Projects of the National Research Council, I would like to invite you to a public briefing to mark the release of a new report entitled Harnessing Science and Technology for America's Economic Future. The public briefing will be held 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM on July 14, 1999 (Wednesday) in the Lecture Room of the National Academy of Sciences Building at 2100 C St., NW, Washington, DC. The co-chairs of the steering committee that prepared the report, former Governor of Pennsylvania and U.S. Attorney General Dick Thornburgh and SEMATECH Chairman Bill Spencer, will lead the discussion. The full steering committee roster is attached. The report examines how the United States can better utilize new science and technology to improve economic performance over the next 10-20 years. The steering committee headed by Thornburgh and Spencer developed long-term national goals and specific action items in areas such as increasing S&T investments and improving education. The report also contains papers and presentations from an NRC forum event held in 1998. The activity is supported by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. Copies of the report will be available at the public briefing.
