The US Attorney for the Southern Dist. of New York said that 14 owners and managers of six Internet sports betting companies in the Caribbean or Central America have been charged withe conspiracy to transmit bets and wagers on sporting events via the Internet and telephones. These cases are the first federal prosecutions of sports betting over the Internet. Atty. Gen. Reno said: "The Internet is not an electronic sanctuary for illegal betting. If a state outlaws soliciting or accepting bets, you can't evade those requirements by going on-line. And to Internet betting operators everywhere we have a simple message: You can't hide on-line and you can't hide off-shore." ******************************** See you at INET'98, Geneva 21-24, July 98 <http://www.isoc.org/inet98/>
