While policy makers and Internet industry officials debate the next steps in
transferring domain name registration responsibilities to the private
sector, the Internet Council of Registrars (Core) is moving ahead, and says
it has already processed more than 40 applications from companies around the
world. Core initially planned to limit the number of registrars in order to
better monitor potential trademark dispute situations, but says it was
persuaded to change its policy when critics charged a small number of
registrars wouldn't produce the desired level of competition. "The
application process will be ongoing, without deadlines, because we need to
provide people all over the world with greater choice in both Internet
addresses and registration services," says Core's executive committee
chairman. (Los Angeles Times 20 Jul 98)
