They kind of blur the software patent issues with the crypto export issues,
but it seems significant that the export issue has appeared on the Inky's
list of important business news.

Take a look at a tiny Irish software company known as SSE and you'll see
why American firms are frustrated with U.S. restrictions on the export of
data-scrambling technology.

Last August, SSE brought to market a product called TrustedWeb that enables
telecommunications companies, banks and the military to control access to
information on networked computer systems.

The product is based in part on an algorithm, a mathematical formula,
developed by RSA Data Security Inc., of Redwood City, Calif., and, because
of that, offers advanced data-scrambling -- 128-bit encryption.

SSE is free to sell its product anywhere in the world -- anywhere but the
United States, because it does not have a license from RSA to sell
TrustedWeb in America.
