Domain Registration in Geneva Assailed
by Rebecca Vesely
3:08pm 30.Sep.97.PDT The chairman of a House panel that
has cast its gaze on the future of domain-name
administration said today that a non-governmental pact
signed earlier this year won't fly because it will undercut
US clout.

"American taxpayers, companies, and government built the
Internet," said Representative Charles Pickering
(R-Mississippi), chairman of the House Science
subcommittee on Basic Research. "This is something
uniquely American."

The agreement on which Pickering held forth is one drafted
by the International Ad Hoc Committee agreement earlier
this year. The committee, the creation of the Internet
Society and the Internet Assigned Number Authority, held a
widely publicized signing ceremony in Geneva in May in
which a host of telcos and other Net players joined.

(rest cut, see URL
http://www.wired.com/news/news/politics/story/7321.html
for the full story.)

Article goes on to say that Pickering didn't like the idea of
the having domain name registration controlled by an organization
in Geneva, should be in the US. Mentions the Libyan story - perhaps
the worst bit of PR the IAHC have managed so far.

Doesn't sound like a good day for the global Internet,
hopefully other articles will show things in a different light.

More positive note. List of URLs for prepare submitted testimony
for (I think) all witnesses from Sept. 24 and 30 hearings (I found
Larry Irving's comments interesting, especially as he will be very
involved in drafting Commerce Dept.'s report on the request for
comment procedure.)
