NSF NETS "VIRTUAL MONEY" FOR NGI U.S. Senate and House conferees on the National Science Foundation's 1998 budget have allocated $23 million for the Clinton Administration's Next-Generation Internet project, to be funded from the $50 annual fee collected by Network Solutions Inc. for registering Internet domain names. The $23 million will cover NSF's $10 million request to Congress and $13 million it hoped to get from the Department of Energy to foster university relations. Last week DOE's request for $35 million for the NGI was zeroed out by its spending panel.
