Thursday, November 20th, in San Jose, A high-tech gathering for Wharton Alums and Friends The Wharton Club is proud to welcome David J. Farber, Alfred Fitler Moore Professor of Telecommunication Systems at the University of Pennsylvania to present a STATE OF THE FIELD ADDRESS The Future of Telecommunications and Networking-an Attempt to Predict the Unpredictable Twenty years ago, most if not all projections of telecommunications technology would have missed the revolution of packet networking and what it has done to the staid world of communications. With a modest hope of being a better predictor than we were back then, Farber will explore what forces are shaping the future and what and how technologies behind optical and electronic communications technology are apt to merge with future "switching systems" to produce the networking of the 21st century. Specific discussions will include the evolution of satellite, terrestrial, and radio systems; how they may blend together; and how such communications systems will impact the computer architecture and software systems of the 2100s. DAVID J. Farber is the Alfred Fitler Moore Professor of Telecommunication Systems at the University of Pennsylvania where he is leading research in ultra-high-speed networking and electronic commerce. He was responsible for the design of the DCS system, one of the first operational message-based, fully distributed systems, and is one of the authors of SNOBOL programming language. He was founding vice chair of the SIGCOMM, one of the principals in the creation and implementation of CSNet, NSFNet, BITNETT II, and CREN. He was instrumental in the creation of the NSF/DARPA funded Gigabit Network Testbed Initiative and served as chair of the Gigabit Testbed Coordination Committee. His background includes positions at Bell Labs, the Rand Corp, SDS, UC Irvine, and the University of Delaware. Farber is a Fellow of the IEEE and holds several awards, including the John Scott Award for contributions to the welfare of mankind and the 1995 SIGCOMM Award for lifelong contributions to digital communications. He is a member of the Presidential Advisory Committee on HPCC, IT, and NGI; serves on the board of directors of both the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the Internet Society; and is a Fellow of the Japan Glocom Institute, the Cyberlaw Institute, and a Governor of ICCC.
