LAWSUIT THREATENS NGI FUNDING A lawsuit filed last month by a group of companies against Network Solutions and the National Science Foundation could prohibit the NSF from spending its share of the money allocated to the government's Next Generation Internet project. Congress recently authorized NSF to spend $23 million on the high-speed network, derived from a trust fund run by Network Solutions to promote the Internet's "preservation and enhancement." The company contributes about a third of all Internet domain name registration fees to the fund. A lawyer for the plaintiffs says the money already in the trust fund is now "subject to the jurisdiction of the federal court and must not be touched," but an NSF networking official told Senators last week that the money had already been transferred to NSF's account. NSF's general counsel says "at this time, we plan to follow Congress's directive."
