Please are there any volunteers to help with the JPL/NASA Mars landing
Java cyber cast event.

We are looking for ways to make the record books with the JPL/NASA
Mars landing on the 4 July in terms of viewers of the event. We are
using a Java applet that plays H.263 and gsm audio on PCs and
Macintosh computers so that there is no plugin or other software to
mess with. The player will play on JIT implementations of Java on UNIX
too, but most UNIX browsers are too slow.

The Vosaic distribution scheme records the number of end users and we
will be making the statistics available afterwards.
We are trying to see if we can get a record number of people looking at
the event. The Vosaic distribution scheme is aimed at the 28.8 phone
user. The video is 16 kbps.

An example of the video can be found at
http://vosaic.com/tv/live.html
which is showing a video tape (it does rewind unfortunately).

We use a distribution tree with self adapting reflectors. Each
reflector can handle up to 2000 clients (depending on host and network)
although the most we have actually had on one reflector was 600 at the
same time.

The reflectors use UDP to traverse the Internet and http to deliver the
video over the phone. The reflectors have the capability of switching
sources if the network gets congested. The reflector is just a daemon
that duplicates the source.

If you would be interested in helping us distribute the JPL video
and audio stream over the Internet, please could you either fill in the
reflector form
http://vosaic.com/support/reflectors.html
or contact me or jimw () vosaic com

Thanks for your patience with my request.

The Jpl guys have agreed to give us a live video feed to put up in
JAVA!!!! This is huge as they previously only wanted to do audio...
They saw the java stuff and were in agreement that it is real cool and
we should do it. We should tap our entire sphere of influence for as
many reflectors as we cand get. This includes any educational
institutions that we can muster... ie NCSA, MIT, KOREA, Univ of Norway,
Stanford, INRIA, etc etc etc.... thanks

Chuck
