REMINDER: NIST Usability Engineering Symposium on March 3 Don't miss the chance to hear some of the most prominent experts in the field for a minimal registration fee of $75. Other meetings of this caliber can cost more than 3-6 times this amount. We want to be sure that both government and industry personnel are well represented because usability engineering is an important enabling technology. Properly applied, it will increase productivity and reduce costs in computer systems. SYMPOSIUM ANNOUNCEMENT Usability Engineering 2: Measurement and Methods (UE2) National Institute of Standards and Technology Administration Building (101), Green Auditorium Gaithersburg, Maryland MARCH 3, 1997 Hosted by: Natural Language Processing & Information Retrieval Group Visualization & Virtual Reality Group Information Access & User Interfaces Division Information Technology Laboratory in cooperation with Human Computer Interaction Lab University of Maryland PLEASE VISIT OUR WEB SITE FOR MORE COMPLETE INFORMATION: http://www-nlpir.nist.gov/sym97web ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- "We expect technology to transform the American economy into the most productive in the world. The single most significant factor in manifesting this promised productivity from the technology is USABILITY." --Dr. H. Rex Hartson, Virginia Tech, Proc. Usability Engineering: Ind.-Gov Collab. for Sys. Effectiveness and Efficiency, Feb. 1996 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Purpose: UE2's purpose remains the same as the 1996 symposium: it will once again bring together industry and government to exchange information and strategies for achieving effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction in computer-based government systems. New for 1997 is a special focus on measurement and methods. * Re-Inventing Government: Computers are supporting increasingly complex tasks which then require progressively more sophisticated and interactive systems. The fiscal necessity of employing commercial, off-the-shelf (COTS) products with legacy data increases the complexity of designing such systems. Consequently, application of human computer interaction techniques becomes increasingly important to ensure that usable systems are built. This is especially evident in government systems because of the large number (and high cost) of custom computer systems and legacy system integration and updates. Simply put, it is critical for government and industry to implement the best practices now available to ensure the usability of new and re-engineered government systems. * Highlights: o Keynote - Dr. Steve Cross, Director, Software Engineering Institute o Plenary - Dr. Ben Shneiderman, Human Computer Interaction Lab, University of Maryland o government usability success stories o novice, expert, and managerial tracks * Audience: o Project Development Managers o Technical Staff and Researchers o Chief Information Officers o COTS Product Vendors o Government Contractors o Consultants o Procurement Officials o Policymakers o Analysts & Engineers o Users * Organizing Committee o Laura L. Downey, Chair, NIST o Dr. Sharon J. Laskowski, NIST o Elizabeth A. Buie, Computer Sciences Corporation o Bill Hefley, Carnegie Mellon University * Technical Questions? Send email to laura.downey () nist gov or sharon.laskowski () nist gov * Registration Questions? Send email to tammie.grice () nist gov or call 301/975-3883. The cost is $75 for the day. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Usability Engineering 2 - Advance Program ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TIME ALL TRACKS 8:00 (March 3, 1997) AM sign-in, on-site registration ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8:30 NIST Welcome - Laura Downey AM NIST Introduction - Shukri Wakid, Director, Information Technology Laboratory ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8:45 KEYNOTE: Steve Cross, Director, Software Engineering AM Institute, "Towards User-Centered Software Engineering" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9:30 AM break ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TIME NOVICE & EXPERT TRACK MANAGER TRACK Laura Downey, NIST, 9:45 Michael Levi, Bureau of Labor "Executive Overview - AM Statistics (BLS), "Usability Testing Usability Engineering and Web Sites at the BLS" The Bottom Line" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anne Rose, University of Maryland, Elizabeth Buie, Computer 10:15 "Re-engineering User Interfaces at the Sciences Corporation, AM Maryland Department of Juvenile "Making Sense of HCI Justice" Standards and Guidelines" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10:45 AM break ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TIME NOVICE TRACK EXPERT TRACK MANAGER TRACK Nigel Bevan, National Physical Dana Uehling, NASA Laboratory Goddard Space Flight Elizabeth Buie, CSC and 11:00 (UK), Center, (GSFC), Bill Hefley, Carnegie AM "Achieving "Development and Use Mellon University (CMU), Usability of Guidelines at "Specifying Usability in Through User NASA's GSFC" the RFP" Centered Design" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- (11:50 am) (11:50 am) Debby Hix, Charles B.
