ITU PONDERS NEW GROUP FOR GII The International Telecommunication Union is considering founding a sub-group to focus on developing the global information infrastructure. The proposal was introduced by Japan's Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications in May, and will be discussed at the plenipotentiary meeting now underway. The U.S. supports the goal of GII development, but is wary of any additional regulatory hurdles, such as binding mandates on how and when certain technologies could be deployed in member countries.
