        A Researcher's Conventional Wisdom (CW) Report from Washington
                (with apologies to a certain national news magazine)


General:

The White House                 |       This gang not only can't shoot
                                |       straight. They don't even know where the
                               \/       target is!

The Democratic Congress         |       Darn few dry eyes for the arrogant old
                                |       bulls turned out to pasture. What did
                                \/      they do to help the republic? House R.'s
                                        are going to need a big broom to clean
                                        out the attic after 40+ years.




Research:




Basic Research                  |       Welfare for the intellectual (and
                                |       mainly Dem.) elite? Some R.'s have
                                \/      said so.

Basic Research                  |       Traditionally, R.'s have been good to
                                |       basic research. Try to deposit THAT in
                                        the bank. The physicists will!






Defense                       <-->      R.'s love defense. But CW heard nary a
                                        word about defense research. Where are
                                        the bucks? Star Wars redoux? Aimed at
                                        who?


Technology Policy               |       Nuff said!

CW                              |       CW has been proclaiming the end
                                |       of two party government for thirty
                                |       years. (Sure, a different party each
                               \/       time, but don't be picky.) CW's bound to
                                        be right some time.
