WALTHAM, Mass. (AP) -- Kendall Square Research Corp., which
dropped out of the supercomputer business in the fall, said Friday
it was filing for bankruptcy protection.
 ...

The seven-year-old company also said William I. Koch, Kendall
Square's largest shareholder, resigned as chairman of the board of
directors and as a director.

The company is one of several to fall victim of consolidation in
the supercomputer industry. Earlier this summer, Thinking Machines
Corp. of Cambridge began a Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring.
Both Kendall Square and Thinking Machines were early developers
of parallel processing design, based on the use of dozens to
hundreds of processors working together. Larger computer makers
such as IBM and Cray Research have since brought out machines of
similar design.
Koch, one of the richest men in the United States and the winner
of the 1992 America's Cup in yachting, has holdings in electrical
generating plants, coal, petroleum and real estate.
