Funding IETF Secretariat

Dear IETFers,

I apologize for adding to your email load, but this is a matter
of vital importance to all of us who consider the IETF work to
be central to the developing global information infrastructure.
As you know, for many years, ARPA, DOE, NASA and NSF have been
key supporters of Internet-related work and, in recent times,
the work of the IETF and its secretariat at CNRI. In the last
few years, however, the IETF activity has grown dramatically
but the US Agencies quite appropriately have pointed out that
there are now many more beneficiaries of the IETF work than
the federal government. As many of you know, the Internet Society
has undertaken to support part of the cost of the secretariat.
This year, the commitment is $300K and in future years it will
probably be more. The cost of operating the secretariat is
on the order of $1.2M per year. The present attendance fees cover
essentially the out-of-pocket costs associated with each
IETF plenary meeting, but not much more.

The Internet Society has been working with great energy to
recruit sponsors from government, industry and academia around
the world. Your help is now vital if we are to continue this
operation at the level necessary to meet your needs.

I have attached a list of the organizational sponsors of the
Internet Society. If your organization or institution is not
one of them, please give serious thought to joining. The
organizational fees are shown below:

for profit: Founding $20K in 1993, $10K thereafter
non-profit Founding $10K in 1993, $ 5K thereafter

start up (first three years) $1K

Terms of Membership

Charter and Founding Organizations provide the Internet Society with
vital financial support. This substantial and early support has made the
founding of the Internet Society possible. For-profit Founding members
commit to a total of $20,000 during the 1992 and 1993 period and $10,000
per year thereafter. Non-profit, Founding government and educational
institutions commit to half that amount. Regular for-profit and non-profit
organizational members commit to $10,000 and $5,000 per year respectively.
There is also provision for start-ups to become regular members during
their first three years at a cost of $1,000 per year. Organizations
interested in participating in this program should contact Vinton Cerf at
the Internet
Society secretariat.
