Let's not throw the baby out with the water. While DOE's reason's in the request for proposals you saw may be couched in "man(sic)power shortage" wording--and that should be challenged, the advice to young students to choose math and science courses should be maintained. AND YES, better ways of keeping children interested in these fields are still needed. Early years in school are not the ones to close doors to the future, and not taking the necessary courses in math and science will effectively do that. We DO need citizens that are more educated in math and science not only because they may end up as scientists but because these skills are needed in all walks of life. And politics being what it is, the above argument may not have gained approval for funding but one based on THE MYTH may have. -----------------------------
